Both options fix dents. The difference is how, and that changes cost, time, and what happens to your paint.
How each method works
Paintless dent repair works the metal back to shape from behind the panel using specialized tools. The original paint stays in place. A traditional body shop typically sands the area, applies body filler, primes, paints, and blends the finish.
Where PDR usually wins
- Factory paint stays on the vehicle. There is no refinish to match.
- Often lower cost. No filler, primer, or paint steps.
- Often faster. Many repairs finish the same day, on site.
- No trip to a shop. A mobile tech comes to you.
Where a body shop is the better call
- The paint is cracked, chipped, or missing in the damage
- The metal is badly stretched or torn
- The dent is in a spot where we cannot get behind the panel
- The damage includes plastic bumper cracks, broken parts, or frame issues
Sometimes it is both
Some dents are pushed as far as possible with PDR, then a small refinish finishes the job, which can reduce the amount of filler needed. A good tech will tell you if that is a better path for your vehicle.
